FLORIDA'S SHORTEST RR AT 130', SOAKING WET (Hey, don't use that term)
CURVES ARE SOAPED BEFORE RUNNING FOR THE 20-INCH W.B. SPEEDER, BUT THEN, NO PROBLEMS
Each granddaughter decorated her own crosstie
The five-year old went right to work on hers
Middle granddaughter gets some help Oldest discovered the power driver (someone still helping)
Her first (very cautious) solo trip Middle granddaughter (& RR photographer) driving
Speed Demon Hey Nana, isn't it my turn yet?
All of us were actually pulled around Banquet of Ice Cream, Cookies, and Soda Toasts
Background (or why I reneged on my vow, made to
Bill K while on knees at NC track many years ago,
never to build a track).
Indeed, the electric speeder was purchased in Nov. with
"our girls" as the stated the reason ("they are
growing up soooo quickly"). The first time
that they were introduced to the new speeder (running on 25 ft
of planks with furring strips for rails), the middle
granddaughter exclaimed right in front of Phyllis, "Papa,
why don't you build a track around your yard". I
gave her a big hug and was off...
The ground rules by the CFO were that this was to be
a "temporary" track, meaning no (just a little?)
grass was to be destroyed (hence no ballast), and keep
the bugs out as best possible (close the screen
doors, shaved at bottoms, when finished running).
The finished track has 50 ft inside the screened
enclosure, 45 ft across outside wooden deck, 11 ft of
(low) trestle, 18 ft across grass, and 4 ft of
doorways and pads. It is only tied down at the doors and
the trestle. The rail is 3/4 inch and was purchased
from FLSers from around the state.
A big thanks to all for their directions and help, and for their encouragement in this endeavor.
